Word Counter + Character Counter

Count words, characters, paragraphs, reading time, A4 pages, and standard pages from pasted text or local PDF, Word, OpenDocument, spreadsheet, presentation, ebook, subtitle, and text files.

Count words in text, PDFs, Word files, and more

Use the Word Counter + Character Counter when you need more than a simple textarea count. Paste text directly, or switch to file mode to extract readable text from documents and count the result in the browser. It is useful for drafts, PDFs with a text layer, DOCX files, OpenDocument files, slide decks, spreadsheets, ebooks, subtitles, Markdown, CSV, HTML, JSON, and plain text exports.

The tool reports words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, estimated reading time, speaking time, A4 pages, and standard publishing-style pages. File contents stay local to your browser; this tool does not upload the selected files to a server.

What this counter is built for

  • Check word count and character count before submitting essays, articles, proposals, product copy, scripts, or grant text.
  • Count words in text-based PDF files without copying page by page.
  • Inspect DOCX, ODT, RTF, EPUB, PowerPoint, Excel, CSV, Markdown, HTML, JSON, subtitle, and plain text files when the length matters.
  • Select multiple files and count the extracted text together for a dossier, content batch, appendix, documentation set, or translation package.
  • Tune A4 words per page, standard-page characters, reading speed, and speaking speed so estimates match your target format.

Supported file formats

File mode reads formats that can be handled safely on the client side. For PDFs it counts the embedded text layer; scanned image-only PDFs need OCR first. Modern Office and OpenDocument files are read from their structured document contents. Encrypted documents and old binary DOC files are intentionally not supported in the browser.

File types you can count

  • Documents and ebooks: PDF, DOCX, DOCM, DOTX, DOTM, ODT, OTT, RTF, and EPUB.
  • Presentations and spreadsheets: PPTX, PPTM, POTX, POTM, ODP, OTP, XLSX, XLSM, XLTX, XLTM, ODS, and OTS.
  • Writing and plain-text files: TXT, TEXT, Markdown, CSV, TSV, LOG, SRT, VTT, and other text exports.
  • Web and data files: HTML, XHTML, XML, SVG, RSS, Atom, JSON, JSONL, YAML, and YML.
  • Developer-readable text: JS, TS, JSX, TSX, CSS, INI, and similar source files are counted as text.

How the counts are calculated

The word counter analyzes the extracted text after normalizing whitespace. Characters are counted with Unicode-aware logic, so emoji and non-Latin scripts behave more predictably than a raw JavaScript string length. Characters without spaces, UTF-8 bytes, JavaScript code units, paragraphs, lines, non-empty lines, sentences, unique words, average word length, and longest word are reported separately.

Page estimates are deliberately adjustable. A4 pages default to 500 words per full page, while standard pages default to 1,800 characters including spaces. These are estimates, not layout promises, because real pages depend on font, margins, line height, images, tables, and document design.

Metrics included

  • Words, unique words, average word length, and longest word.
  • Characters, characters without spaces, UTF-8 bytes, and JavaScript code units.
  • Sentences, paragraphs, lines, and non-empty lines.
  • A4 page estimates and standard-page estimates with editable assumptions.
  • Reading time and speaking time based on configurable words per minute.

Common use cases

  • Students and researchers can compare assignment length, abstracts, PDF source material, and bibliography notes.
  • Editors and writers can audit drafts, chapters, newsletters, briefs, and web copy before publishing.
  • Marketers can check ad text, landing-page copy, product descriptions, CSV exports, and content batches.
  • Translators and localization teams can estimate workload from DOCX, subtitle, Markdown, HTML, or JSON files.
  • Teams can count documentation bundles, proposals, slide notes, and mixed file sets without sending private files away.

When counts may differ from another app

Different tools define a word or character differently. Hyphenated words, apostrophes, numbers, hidden text, comments, spreadsheet formulas, PDF extraction order, and slide notes can all affect totals. This counter aims to be transparent: it shows the assumptions you can change and separates detailed metrics so you can understand the result instead of relying on one opaque number.

Word and file counter FAQ

Does the tool upload my text or files?

No. Pasted text and selected files are processed in the browser. The tool does not send the content to a server.

Can I count words in a PDF file?

Yes, if the PDF contains selectable text. Scanned image-only PDFs need OCR first, and encrypted PDFs are not supported.

Can I count Word documents?

Yes for modern Word formats such as DOCX, DOCM, DOTX, and DOTM. Old binary DOC files are not handled client side.

Can I count multiple files at once?

Yes. File mode lets you select one or many files, and the tool counts the extracted text together while still showing each file status.

Why does the count differ from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or a PDF reader?

Apps differ in how they treat hyphenated words, numbers, comments, hidden text, headers, footers, formulas, and extracted PDF text. Use this tool as a consistent browser-based count, and adjust the options when your target format has its own rules.

What are A4 pages and standard pages?

A4 pages are estimated from words per page. Standard pages are estimated from characters including spaces. Both values are editable because real layout depends on typography and formatting.
